Isabelle Huppert and DJI Explore Literary Memory in FAMILIARITÉ

Isabelle Huppert has moved behind the camera for FAMILIARITÉ, a short film exploring the resonance of 19th-century French writer George Sand and Song-dynasty poet Li Qingzhao. Shot entirely on the pocket-sized DJI Osmo Pocket 4P, the project seeks to bridge centuries of female expression through a handheld, intimate lens.

The collaboration marks a shift for the Cannes-honored actress, who served as both lead and creative director. By utilizing the unobtrusive nature of the Osmo Pocket 4P, Huppert captured performance-driven moments in spaces that traditionally require large-scale rigs, such as a small rowboat drifting across a pond. The camera’s 3-axis stabilization and 17 stops of dynamic range allowed the production to navigate the high-contrast light of a traditional Chinese garden, where the film’s narrative unfolds.

Beyond technical performance, the film serves as a meditation on the written word. Huppert draws a visual connection between Sand’s defiance of 19th-century gender norms and the enduring verse of Li Qingzhao. By wearing a tailored suit in reference to Sand, Huppert anchors the visual narrative in historical literature, culminating in a wordless exchange with a young girl. The project demonstrates how modern consumer hardware can facilitate complex, poetic storytelling without the interference of heavy production equipment.
