Retail Tech Weekly: Currys Joins TikTok Shop as AI Reshapes Checkout

The retail sector saw a surge in platform diversification this week, led by Currys launching on TikTok Shop and Sainsbury’s debuting AI-powered SmartLists. From drone delivery expansions in the US to autonomous returns processing in Europe, retailers are increasingly embedding sophisticated automation directly into the customer experience to drive loyalty and operational efficiency.

Sainsbury’s is leveraging AI to simplify grocery planning, allowing shoppers to build lists via voice, text, or image recognition while integrating Nectar budget management. Meanwhile, Currys has turned to TikTok Shop to capture younger audiences through live-streamed demos, supported by THG Commerce. In the luxury fashion space, SIMKHAI is adopting the Croissant Pay solution to offer flexible rewards-based checkout directly within Shopify environments.

Operational shifts are also accelerating. Zalando and CEVA Logistics have deployed Sereact’s dual-arm robots in German and Polish facilities to autonomously handle fashion returns, aiming to reduce manual labor. In the US, Walmart and Wing announced a major drone delivery expansion targeting Denver and Seattle for 2027. Elsewhere, The Very Group is utilizing Made With Intent’s behavioural engine to predict customer needs in real-time, reporting a significant revenue uplift per customer during early trials.
