The initiative allows customers to purchase 'Surprise Bags' containing surplus food at less than half the retail price. Rami Baitiéh, CEO at Morrisons, highlighted the scale of the challenge, noting that 80,000 meals are wasted globally every second. By simplifying the process of rescuing unsold goods, the company aims to make sustainable shopping both affordable and accessible for its customer base.
Following the success of the program, the retailer plans to expand its new Chilled Surprise Bags, currently undergoing trials in 25 London stores, to the rest of its supermarket network in the coming months. This effort mirrors broader industry trends, as competitors like M&S also scale up their own partnerships with the app to meet sustainability targets, including the goal to halve food waste by 2030.
