The findings, unveiled at the NextGrid Alliance Summit in Boston, highlight a stark shift in priorities. While 73% of utility leaders now rank grid reliability among their top three concerns—a dramatic rise from 43% in 2025—interest in net-zero targets has plummeted from 54% to just 16%. This recalibration stems from the immense load growth driven by AI data centers, which 74% of respondents identify as a direct threat to system stability.
Despite the urgency, the industry struggles with scaling new solutions. Eighty-four percent of organizations report that moving projects from pilot phases to full rollout now takes more than a year. Innovation efforts remain largely incremental, with 59% of spending focused on minor improvements rather than transformational shifts. Leaders point to a shortage of AI-skilled labor and a deeply ingrained, cautious corporate culture as the primary bottlenecks.
Financial tension is also mounting. Nearly 90% of those surveyed suggest that outdated regulatory frameworks are stifling investment returns, while 83% acknowledge that the costs of building infrastructure to support AI expansion are being passed directly to residential ratepayers. To mitigate these pressures, National Grid has joined the AI Energy Management Alliance, seeking to promote flexible data centers that can reduce usage during peak demand. The company also continues to push for startup partnerships, with 34% of utilities now actively collaborating with early-stage tech firms to bolster grid resilience.
