The disclosure emerged during a federal lawsuit in Mississippi, where the NAACP is challenging the environmental impact of the Colossus 2 data center powering the AI. Stanley stated that the military relies on the 'Grok Gov Model' integrated into the Pentagon’s Maven Smart System. He argued that restricting energy or compute resources for the project would severely undermine critical military operations. According to the statement, this technology enabled forces to strike 2,000 distinct targets within a 96-hour window.
This revelation has intensified scrutiny from Congress. On March 12, a coalition of over 120 House Democrats demanded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth clarify the extent of AI involvement in target selection. The inquiry follows reports that a girls' school in southern Iran was leveled on the first day of the conflict, resulting in the deaths of more than 150 people, primarily children. While the Pentagon maintains that such tools allow commanders to process data faster than adversaries, the military has not disclosed whether the Grok-assisted targeting process played a role in the strike on the school.
