A prison source told the Daily Mail that inmates have used a football-style chant to taunt Brand. The source said staffing shortages mean prisoners can spend much of the weekend locked in their cells, adding that Brand has become a target for their amusement. The source claimed he leaves his cell to collect meals and then returns, describing him as “going around like a shadow.”
The abuse has reportedly been verbal so far. The source warned that any celebrity could be a “high-end target,” but there is no verified indication that Brand has faced a specific threat or been extorted. He is reportedly being held in a vulnerable prisoners’ wing. The report also said an assistant governor warned him and a prison chaplain visited; the content of those conversations has not been independently established.
A London jury found Brand guilty on November 5 of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. Brand has denied wrongdoing. Mr Justice Bennathan refused bail and ordered him into custody pending sentencing on November 9.
Legal experts have suggested Brand could receive a sentence of about eight or nine years, though the decision rests with the judge. His legal team has reportedly considered challenging the verdict. HMP Wandsworth has faced longstanding scrutiny over violence, overcrowding and conditions, although its latest monitoring report identified improvements in violence reduction and healthcare.
