The studio behind the production, Black Bear, confirmed that the decision to pivot to 4DX followed direct requests from fans eager to experience the film’s unconventional narrative through a more visceral lens. The format will deploy over 21 distinct effects, including synchronized vibration, wind, and scent, to heighten the story of a wicker husband navigating a complex romance with an ostracized fisherwoman, played by Olivia Colman.
Directors Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer initially dismissed the 4DX proposal as a joke, but they have since embraced the adaptation as a spectacular fit for their material. Paul Kim, COO of CJ 4DPLEX, noted that the film’s unique aesthetic allows for creative applications of sensory technology. For Skarsgård, the project represents a departure from his darker, more complex roles. The actor faced the physical challenge of performing under heavy prosthetics, forcing him to rely on exaggerated expressions to convey emotion. The film’s distinct look has already permeated pop culture, prompting a promotional tie-in from IKEA that marketed a wicker bench as "husband material" for $199.
