The litigation targets HDFC Bank and its senior management, including CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan, over claims that the institution violated federal securities laws. According to the complaint, the bank allegedly camouflaged payments to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation to induce large deposits, effectively overstating interest income while misclassifying operating expenses. These practices reportedly bypassed internal ethics policies and regulatory standards.
Scrutiny intensified following two major disclosure events in 2026. In March, Chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned, citing practices that were not in congruence with his personal ethics, causing HDFC’s American Depositary Shares to drop 7.28%. By late May, an investigative report detailed that approximately $4.7 million had been funneled through marketing budgets to state entities. Following this revelation, the bank's share price fell an additional 4.1%.
Faruqi & Faruqi, LLP, which is spearheading the investigation, notes that investors who suffered losses during the class period are not required to serve as lead plaintiffs to recover potential damages.
