Organized by the nonprofit New York Dog Parade, the festivities are presented by Kismet, the pet lifestyle brand founded by John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. Founder Fern Watt notes that the competition remains intense, with elaborate entries ranging from culinary-themed outfits to intricate pop-culture costumes. Beyond the parade itself, the event serves as a platform for rescue initiatives, partnering with the ASPCA and Animal Care Centers of NYC to highlight adoptable animals during Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.
Registration for those wishing to march opens September 25 at noon, with spots expected to fill quickly due to capacity limits at Tompkins Square Park. For the first time, organizers will stream the costume competition live, allowing a wider audience to view the pageantry. The event is supported by a coalition of partners, including Fetch Pet Insurance and the Veterinary Emergency Group, aimed at fostering a year-round community for local pet owners and their companions.
