VitalCore Launches Medical Operations at Mecklenburg County Jail North

The transition to the North facility represents a significant logistical shift for the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. Unlike standard facility management, VitalCore faced the challenge of establishing a medical operation without existing supplies or workflows. The company handled the procurement of all medical equipment, the recruitment of specialized staff—including nurses, dental professionals, and behavioral health experts—and the creation of daily clinical protocols prior to the site's opening.

Sheriff Garry McFadden characterized the move as a precision-led operation, noting that the residents prioritized for relocation are those already engaged in rehabilitation programs intended to support their eventual reentry into the community. The facility, originally built in 1994, underwent a significant transformation after closing as a juvenile detention center in 2022 to return to adult operations. Sandra Hoover, VitalCore’s deputy chief of operations, emphasized that the success of the launch relied on the collaborative development of resources necessary to ensure the safety and health of the population in custody.
