Brad Boucher Redesigns the Meditation Seat for Aging Bodies

As meditation shifts from niche studios into the daily routines of millions, many practitioners face an unexpected barrier: their own bodies. In Ashland, Oregon, furniture designer Brad Boucher is addressing this physical decline by launching HŌM Furnishings, a collection of handcrafted seats engineered to sustain long-term floor-based practice.

For decades, the standard meditation cushion has demanded a level of hip and ankle flexibility that often fades by the time practitioners reach their 50s or 60s. Recognizing that physical pain was shortening sessions rather than deepening them, Boucher spent years prototyping alternatives in his workshop. He eventually landed on a design that elevates the user nine to eleven inches off the ground, effectively bridging the gap between traditional floor sitting and chair-based comfort.

Each piece in the four-seat collection—The Bodhi, The Self Shelf, The Chairish, and The Epiphany—utilizes curved rocker feet to help the pelvis settle into a natural, ergonomic angle. By using solid Acacia hardwood, the seats offer structural support while maintaining the grounded aesthetic of a traditional space. According to Boucher, the objective is not to simplify the act of meditation, but to remove the friction caused by discomfort. By providing a dedicated, supportive space, he believes the body learns to settle faster, allowing the mind to follow suit without the distraction of aching joints.
