TIG and KMA Redefine Accessibility Standards for Self-Service Tech

Accessibility now extends beyond the hardware to the entire transaction lifecycle. The Industry Group and the Kiosk Manufacturer Association recently met with the U.S. Access Board to argue that modern digital interfaces—from AI voice systems to mobile QR codes—must ensure independent, private service for every user.

Craig Allen Keefner, who leads both organizations, emphasizes that the industry can no longer treat kiosks or payment terminals as isolated accessibility puzzles. Instead, the focus has shifted to the customer experience: the ability to arrive, identify a service, navigate the interface, pay, and receive assistance without external help. The committee’s recent discussions spanned diverse sectors, including EV charging, smart vending, and government-service workflows.

While technologies like biometrics and conversational AI hold the potential to broaden access, the group warns against using them as exclusive pathways. These tools should supplement rather than replace standard options. Alongside these policy efforts, TIG is expanding its market intelligence footprint. The firm recently announced that Canopee Tech has appointed Bruno LO-RE as chairman and president to drive international growth, while TIG prepares to launch TIGER 2027, a year-round analytical program, at the NRF show in January. The organization will also participate in the upcoming Automated Retail & Kiosk Innovation Show in Miami this December.
