The commercial auto sector has struggled through 14 consecutive years of underwriting losses, totaling over $10 billion in the last two years alone. While nearly every interstate truck currently generates tracking data under federal ELD mandates, insurers have been unable to capitalize on this information due to incompatible formats across roughly 200 different telematics providers. TruckerCloud’s new platform resolves these discrepancies by normalizing trip data, mileage, and timestamps into a single, structured record.
FleetFile provides a uniform crash risk score that insurers can apply at the point of quote or renewal, regardless of the specific hardware installed in a vehicle. Because the system utilizes existing data streams, it eliminates the need for lengthy monitoring periods. Spencer Mitchell, founder and CEO of TruckerCloud, noted that the industry has long sought to price risk using telematics, but lacked a scalable way to implement it across an entire book of business. By filing the score with state regulators, the company aims to move beyond simple loss control and allow insurers to adjust rates based on precise behavioral data. Geoff Werner, a former Willis Towers Watson leader and co-author of the Casualty Actuarial Society’s foundational ratemaking textbook, is advising the company on the filing process. The platform is currently available to TruckerCloud's network of over 70 insurers and MGAs, with plans to expand the scoring technology to lighter-duty commercial vehicles in the near future.
