Sabre Claims Lead in Agentic AI Race with MCP Server

The travel sector is currently pivoting from the decade-long focus on NDC toward a new standard: the Model-based Connectivity Protocol (MCP). Sabre positions this shift as the industry's "streaming moment," asserting that its early investment provides a decisive advantage over competitors still relying on partnerships to bridge their technical gaps. According to the company, the platform functions as a connective layer, allowing AI agents to interface directly with Sabre's proprietary inventory and airline-hotel commercial logic.

Practical implementation is already visible across multiple channels. Virgin Australia, for instance, utilized the MCP architecture to overhaul its flight search capabilities, earning a 2026 Skift IDEA award for its conversational AI implementation. Meanwhile, major travel management players—including Internova, Global Travel Collection, Nexion, and ALTOUR—are leveraging the server to automate backend servicing. Chief Operating Officer Shawn Williams noted that while the industry previously spent years mastering NDC distribution, the current transition to AI-driven retailing requires a different approach. He maintains that Sabre is no longer following industry standards but is instead setting the technical pace for how travel is bought and sold globally.
