Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE to Build First Battery Project in Italy

Canadian Solar subsidiary e-STORAGE has secured a contract with Axpo to deploy an 8 MW/40 MWh battery energy storage system at the Rizziconi power plant in Calabria. This debut project in the Italian market aims to stabilize grid fluctuations caused by high solar output and marks the beginning of a strategic partnership.

Construction at the existing combined-cycle gas power plant is scheduled for late 2026, with commercial operations expected in early 2028. The facility will utilize e-STORAGE's SolBank 3.0 battery blocks and the proprietary EQ-S Energy Management System, providing a fully integrated solution designed to manage regional grid constraints.

Southern Italy frequently faces midday energy surpluses that exceed network capacity, leading to wasted solar generation and higher costs. By capturing this excess energy and redistributing it during peak demand, the installation will provide critical flexibility to a region that has historically relied on power imported from the north. Frank Amend, head of batteries at Axpo, noted that the project is a central component of the company’s broader strategy to enhance European grid reliability. Jeff Roy, president of e-STORAGE, highlighted the deal as a gateway into one of Europe's most dynamic storage markets and a foundation for future joint initiatives across the continent.
