Davis, the visionary behind Arista and J Records, was admitted to a New York City hospital in May for an upper respiratory infection. Although he remained hospitalized longer than initially anticipated, those closest to him, including his longtime partner Greg Schriefer, felt optimistic after he returned home. Composer Randy Edelman, who saw Davis months prior, noted the executive showed no signs of slowing down, maintaining the sharp focus that defined his decades-long career. His final public appearance occurred May 19 at The Gordon Parks Foundation Awards, shortly before his health concerns surfaced.

Beyond his professional success and estimated $850 million net worth, Davis was defined by his personal devotion to family and his 21-year relationship with Schriefer.
