Herman Miller Launches Direct Refurbishment Program for Aeron Chairs

More than 9 million Aeron chairs have been sold globally since the design’s inception, creating a massive secondary market. Herman Miller is now stepping directly into that space, launching an official refurbishment program in the United States and Canada to restore pre-owned units to factory-certified standards.

The initiative aims to extend the lifecycle of the iconic seating while reducing environmental waste. By utilizing original materials and manufacturing expertise, the company seeks to offer a high-performance alternative to unauthorized resellers. Each chair undergoes a rigorous four-stage process, including deep cleaning, component replacement, and a final calibration to ensure every adjustment meets original factory specifications.

"When we talk sustainability, it's not just how a product is made—it's how long it performs," said Gabe Wing, Vice President of Sustainability at MillerKnoll. The program is an expansion of the company’s existing rePurpose effort, which has diverted over 23 million pounds of furniture from landfills since 2009. These refurbished units come with a 5-year warranty, bridging the gap between the affordability of the secondary market and the reliability of a new purchase. This strategy reflects a shift in retail approach, targeting customers who prioritize both design longevity and circular consumption.
