Invisible Wounds Foundation Secures $500,000 for Brain Health Research

A $500,000 grant from the DAV Charitable Service Trust will fund the Military Brain Health Collaborative, a Chicago-based initiative focused on the long-term neurological consequences of blast exposure. The project seeks to bridge critical gaps in how the medical community diagnoses and treats injuries sustained by military personnel.

For over two decades, hundreds of thousands of service members have faced repeated exposure to blasts from artillery, heavy weapons, and explosive training. Despite these risks, fundamental questions regarding the biological mechanisms of brain trauma remain unanswered. Shannon Finn Connell, CEO of the Invisible Wounds Foundation, stated that the funding allows the organization to unify experts in neuroscience, engineering, and military medicine to accelerate life-improving discoveries.

The Collaborative serves as a central hub to align research efforts across federal agencies, academic institutions, and private industry. Oversight of the program falls to Dr. Lara Campbell, a former National Science Foundation director. According to Dr. James Kelly, the foundation's chief medical scientist, the mission is to decode why acute and repetitive blast exposure causes measurable brain changes even when a concussion is not formally diagnosed. By applying the same scientific urgency found in other medical fields, the foundation aims to develop precise diagnostics for veterans who currently face these hidden, debilitating conditions.
