The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced on November 5 that the Costume Institute exhibition and gala will be themed “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” Vogue reported. The exhibition will consider how wardrobe staples such as shirts and jeans can become high fashion, as well as how materials including paper, aluminum and plastic can be turned into wearable art.
The theme followed the withdrawal of designer John Galliano, who had been due to be honored. Galliano stepped down after backlash over his 2011 criminal conviction for an antisemitic outburst in Paris. Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator in charge, told Vogue he had no alternative theme ready and decided it would be better to develop a new idea than replace one designer with another. He wanted an exhibition with “contemporary resonance,” and one as challenging and provocative as the planned Galliano show.
After the announcement, users called for Sandler to receive an invitation. “If Adam Sandler isn’t on the guest list for the 2027 Met Gala, what’s even the point?” one wrote. Others joked about dressing like him or shared edited images of the actor on the Met’s steps.
Sandler’s relaxed look—often oversized shirts, hoodies, baggy shorts and sneakers—has inspired the term “Sandlercore.” A Google search report in early December 2021 ranked him first among celebrities with trending styles that year, ahead of Harry Styles, Britney Spears, Doja Cat, Cher and Lizzo. Vogue later named him a Fashion Icon. Sandler has said formal clothes feel restrictive and itchy, and described his influence as “accidental.”
