Schumer Targets Iran War Funding Following Election Gains

Following a successful midterm cycle that handed Democrats control of both congressional chambers, Senate leader Chuck Schumer signaled on Wednesday that his party intends to leverage the power of the purse to force an end to President Donald Trump’s unauthorized military engagement with Iran.

With a projected 54-seat majority in the Senate, Democrats are moving beyond symbolic war powers resolutions. Schumer stated that the party plans to utilize constitutional budgetary authority to compel a withdrawal, citing the lack of congressional authorization for the conflict that began in February. This legislative maneuver aims to freeze funding for the Department of Defense until the administration agrees to wind down hostilities.

The push for de-escalation appears to have gained momentum within the GOP itself. Vice President JD Vance recently conceded that voter frustration over the war and the subsequent surge in energy prices—driven by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz—served as the primary catalysts for the Republican electoral defeat. Vance’s assessment received public backing from Donald Trump Jr., highlighting an internal rift within the administration over the political costs of the ongoing military campaign.
