Duff’s frustration peaked in the early 2000s, shortly after she wrapped production on the Lizzie McGuire movie in Italy. By that stage, the constant public recognition had become stifling. She admitted to Paper Magazine that she felt completely done with the character, having filmed 65 episodes back-to-back in two years. At the time, she made a firm decision to distance herself from the role, going as far as refusing to perform the show's iconic soundtrack, including the hit song What Dreams Are Made Of.
While she eventually found a sense of peace with her past, the path back to the character was never straightforward. A planned reboot for Disney+ was scrapped in 2020 due to creative disagreements over the show's direction. Duff insisted that any return had to be authentic to a thirty-year-old version of Lizzie, who would have been grappling with a cheating fiancé rather than the lighthearted dilemmas of her youth. Reflecting on the failed project, the actress remains philosophical, noting that while the reboot never materialized, she appreciates the enduring connection fans still feel toward the series.
