Van Hollen Joins Calls for Medicare for All as Senate Control Hangs in Balance

Senator Chris Van Hollen has signaled a shift in the Democratic platform, calling for a Medicare for All solution to address skyrocketing healthcare costs. As the party eyes a potential Senate majority in November, the Maryland Democrat joins a growing list of presidential hopefuls backing a single-payer system to overhaul the current industry.

Van Hollen, who once favored a public insurance option to compete with private firms, now argues that Congress must stop tinkering at the margins of a broken system. He points to excessive administrative overhead and poor health outcomes as evidence that the for-profit model is failing. His support aligns him with figures like Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ro Khanna, as well as California Governor Gavin Newsom, all of whom advocate for universal coverage.

Should Democrats regain the Senate, Bernie Sanders is expected to reclaim the chair of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee. While actual legislation would likely move through the Finance Committee, Sanders’ leadership would provide a platform to force industry accountability. He and Senator Ron Wyden have already pushed for high-profile hearings to grill insurance CEOs over rising premiums, executive compensation, and coverage denials.

The political environment for such a move has evolved, with public sentiment shifting toward government-backed plans. A KFF survey from September indicates that 66% of adults support a national health plan, a figure that includes significant numbers of independents and even some Republicans. With midterms approaching, the potential arrival of new supporters like Abdul El-Sayed and Troy Jackson could further solidify this push within the party.
