The tension began in August when O’Donnell claimed on a podcast that Judd was a Trump supporter, noting that the two maintained their three-decade friendship by avoiding political discourse. Judd quickly pushed back on the assertion in an interview with PEOPLE, expressing shock at the claim and clarifying that she identifies as an independent who does not discuss politics with the TV host.
Following the public pushback, O’Donnell issued an apology on Instagram, stating she was wrong to link Judd’s past concert appearances to political allegiance. Representatives for the Grammy-winning artist further clarified that while Judd has performed for seven presidents—both Democrats and Republicans, beginning with Jimmy Carter—the current president was not among them. Judd emphasized that she prefers to avoid public drama, focusing instead on her music and the importance of personal connection over political divides.
