Pearson warns of a 'triple capability gap' in skilled trades

As artificial intelligence reshapes manual and technical professions, a new generation of workers is entering the workforce ill-equipped to handle the transition. Research from Pearson reveals a deepening divide where rapid technological adoption outpaces the traditional training systems required to maintain safety and expertise in essential service sectors.

The report, titled 'For Every Future,' highlights an emerging crisis for industries that keep hospitals, factories, and infrastructure functioning. The issue stems from two simultaneous pressures: AI is evolving faster than educational curricula can be updated, while a wave of retiring professionals is taking decades of irreplaceable practical knowledge with them. This leaves new employees at risk of becoming technically proficient with software while lacking the hands-on experience necessary for high-stakes environments.

To bridge this divide, Pearson identifies a requirement for three core competencies: the judgment to apply AI safely, the retention of uniquely human skills, and the preservation of institutional expertise. The urgency is underscored by data showing that nearly 99% of skilled job openings in the UK and 98.5% in the US are driven by the need to replace departing workers rather than just expansion. Without a fundamental shift in how training is delivered—moving toward simulation and intensive mentorship—employers face mounting risks regarding accuracy and safety in critical roles.
