Sainsbury’s Faces Scrutiny Over AI Shoplifting Allegations

A shopper in East Dulwich was wrongly confronted by management at a self-service checkout after facial recognition software flagged him as a potential offender. Despite the incident, Sainsbury’s confirmed it will proceed with plans to install the Facewatch AI system in approximately 200 stores throughout 2026.

Matt Arnold, 46, was attempting to purchase alcohol at the supermarket when staff interrupted his transaction, citing an AI-generated alert. Arnold described the confusion of being singled out while scanning his own groceries and using a Nectar loyalty card, a behavior he noted was inconsistent with shoplifting. Upon being escorted from the premises, he observed a red circle highlighting his face on a CCTV monitor.

Sainsbury’s maintains that the incident stemmed from human error during the communication process rather than a failure of the technology itself. A company spokesperson emphasized that the system boasts a 99.98% accuracy rate and that every automated match undergoes review by a trained manager. Facewatch corroborated this assessment, stating that while the software issued a correct alert, the subsequent handling by store staff was flawed. This case follows a similar occurrence at an Elephant and Castle location, where another individual was incorrectly identified, prompting an apology from the retailer.
