Morgan Freeman Captures a Century of Blues in New Symphonic Project

The Oscar-winning actor produced and narrated this collection, which traces a century of blues history through collaborations with Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’, and the Chineke! Orchestra. The project moves beyond mere nostalgia; it embeds the genre within a symphonic framework, opening with Taj Mahal’s rendition of Son House’s “Death Letter Blues.” Freeman intentionally timed the release of this lead track to coincide with Juneteenth, underscoring the historical weight of a genre he describes as a visceral, rhythmic expression of humanity born from the labor and life of African Americans.

Released through Decca Records, the project extends into a three-date concert series that concludes in Gulfport, Mississippi, on October 17, grounding the music in the state where Freeman spent his formative years. While Freeman has previously lent his distinctive voice to albums by B.o.B. and Metro Boomin, this work marks his most significant creative role in music to date. His commitment to the genre remains a constant, evidenced by his co-ownership of the Ground Zero Blues Club. Even as he champions this musical history, Freeman maintains his presence on screen, recently reprising his role as Edwin Mullins in the third season of the Paramount+ thriller "Lioness."
