Jake T. Austin Claims Disney Snubbed Him from Wizards Reboot

Conflict has erupted over the Wizards of Waverly Place revival, as original cast member Jake T. Austin publicly accused Disney of excluding him from the production and its premiere. While Austin claims he was left in the dark, producers and his former co-star offer a starkly different account of events.

Austin, who played Max Russo in the 2007–2012 series, revealed on social media that he felt dismissed by the network, alleging he was the only member of the Russo family not invited to visit the set or attend the 2024 premiere. He stated that while he met with Disney in 2020 to discuss a potential return, communication stalled until after the first season concluded. By the time he received outreach from co-star David Henrie regarding a second-season appearance, Austin declined, citing a lack of interest in the creative direction of the show.

David Henrie and the series’ showrunners have countered these claims, asserting that Disney made multiple attempts to contact Austin through his representation. A showrunner confirmed that they reached out to him repeatedly without receiving a response. Despite the behind-the-scenes friction, the reboot acknowledged the character of Max Russo on-screen, with Henrie’s character revealing that his brother had become a billionaire running the family’s sandwich shop chain.
