Elanco Secures FDA Emergency Authorization for Screwworm Wound Spray

The authorization allows for the application of dicyclanil-based CLiK Extra on or around wounds in cattle, sheep, goats, swine, camelids, and specific captive species, including American bison and bighorn sheep. While the spray acts as a preventative measure, Elanco technical experts clarified that it is not intended to treat active infestations. Should an animal already be infested, veterinarians must utilize alternative treatment protocols.

This move follows the USDA’s confirmation in June 2026 that the New World screwworm, a pest capable of consuming living flesh, had re-entered the country. To combat the spread, Elanco has expanded its available toolkit, which now includes Negasunt Powder and Tanidil, both distributed under federal coordination. Dr. M. Wayne Ayers, a senior technical consultant for Elanco, emphasized that consistent physical inspection of livestock remains the primary defense. Producers are encouraged to monitor animals closely and apply wound care immediately to minimize the risk of larvae development and subsequent life-cycle completion of the flies.
