Asda and Morrisons deploy new AI tech to secure UK stores

Retailers are accelerating the adoption of digital intelligence to combat theft and streamline operations. Asda is expanding a crime-reporting pilot following a successful ten-week trial in London, while Morrisons is deploying Everseen’s computer vision across 200 stores to monitor self-checkout accuracy and reduce shrinkage.

Asda’s move follows a London-based pilot that delivered measurable operational gains. The retailer reported a 55% increase in crime prevention rates and an 80% reduction in incident reporting time. By utilizing the Auror platform, staff can now identify repeat offenders in real-time and collaborate more effectively with local law enforcement. According to Asda Chief Operating Officer David Lepley, the shared intelligence network allows the firm to focus resources on the most prolific offenders, a strategy echoed by Auror’s UK leadership, who note that a small fraction of individuals are responsible for the vast majority of retail crime.

Meanwhile, Morrisons is tackling checkout friction through its partnership with Everseen. The Evercheck platform uses real-time computer vision to assist customers at self-service kiosks, offering on-screen prompts to correct scanning errors without requiring immediate staff intervention. This deployment aims to maintain queue velocity while ensuring that operational performance does not come at the cost of customer satisfaction. Both initiatives highlight a broader industry shift toward using AI-driven data to protect store assets and optimize the shopping experience.
