Peabody Energy Faces Class Action Over Alleged Misleading Mine Disclosures

Investors who suffered losses in Peabody Energy Corporation stock between October 14, 2024, and May 4, 2026, are being urged to join a pending class action lawsuit. The litigation centers on claims that the company misled shareholders regarding the production readiness of its flagship Centurion mine in Queensland, Australia.

The legal action, spearheaded by the firm Hagens Berman, targets assertions made by Peabody management during the class period. While the company publicly maintained that development at the Centurion site was proceeding on schedule—even claiming in February 2026 that the final shielding was installed—plaintiffs contend these statements masked persistent mechanical and electrical failures. The complaint alleges that leadership maintained optimistic financial and production guidance despite being aware of significant operational hurdles that hampered the mine's ramp-up.

The discrepancy between company projections and operational reality became public through two critical disclosures. On March 30, 2026, Peabody slashed its first-quarter production guidance for the Centurion facility from 700,000 tons to 250,000 tons, a move that triggered a nearly 10% drop in share price. A second blow followed on May 5, 2026, when the firm reduced its full-year sales outlook by 28%, citing ongoing commissioning headwinds and resulting in a further 6% decline in stock value.

Reed Kathrein, the Hagens Berman partner overseeing the investigation, stated that the firm is working to pinpoint exactly when management became aware that the ramp-up was failing. Shareholders seeking to act as lead plaintiffs have until August 24, 2026, to file their motions. The firm is also encouraging individuals with non-public information regarding the company's internal operations to come forward, noting the potential for whistleblower rewards under SEC programs.
