Public Citizen’s latest brief warns that confirming Oz would accelerate the expansion of Medicare Advantage plans, which are operated by for-profit insurers. The group highlighted a 2022 proposal championed by Oz dubbed "Medicare Advantage for All," a plan that would effectively phase out traditional Medicare by shifting coverage for most Americans to private entities. Advocates argue that this model prioritizes corporate profit over patient outcomes, noting that private plans are frequently criticized for denying necessary care and overbilling the federal government by billions annually.
Financial disclosures reveal that Oz holds significant investments in major industry players, including UnitedHealth Group and CVS Health. Eagan Kemp, a healthcare advocate at the organization, described the nomination as egregious, citing these deep financial ties as a primary conflict of interest. Meanwhile, a coalition of Senate Democrats led by Elizabeth Warren has signaled growing alarm, warning that Oz’s characterization of traditional Medicare as "highly dysfunctional" suggests an intent to dismantle the program rather than protect the millions of seniors who rely on it for essential medical coverage.
