Youngstown Breaks Ground on Defense and Aerospace Manufacturing Hub

Managed by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining, the facility will occupy a 130,000-square-foot structure designed specifically to meet Department of Defense contracting requirements. The site features high-capacity power systems and specialized, secure manufacturing bays intended to attract companies competing for federal defense contracts. This renovation is supported by a $750,000 state capital investment and $1.35 million in local matching funds from the City of Youngstown.

Ohio Lt. Governor Jim Tressel attended the ceremony, framing the development as a continuation of the Mahoning Valley’s industrial legacy. Beyond the immediate construction, the hub is expected to generate 185 STEM credentials and 40 internships. YBI CEO Barb Ewing noted that the project transitions the region from planning to active development, marking a shift in the local economic trajectory. Local and state officials, including State Senator Al Cutrona and Representative Lauren McNally, were recognized for their efforts in navigating the legislative funding process for the facility.
