Vance Backs Ramaswamy Ad Targeting Opponent’s Childhood Trauma

Vice President JD Vance has dismissed widespread outrage over a controversial campaign ad from Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, which features the estranged mother of his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton, accusing her of lying about being a childhood rape victim.

Vance told reporters in Cincinnati that he was "disgusted" not by the content of the advertisement, which relies on the testimony of a woman who lost custody of her children in 1978, but by fellow Republicans who have criticized the move. He urged his party to ignore the moral implications of the $4 million campaign and focus on electoral victory, stating that whether the ad is appropriate is not his concern.

The video, which claims Acton fabricated stories of homelessness and abuse, has drawn sharp condemnation from across the political spectrum. Critics point out that court records support Acton’s claims regarding her stepfather, whom her mother remained married to for decades. Several prominent Republicans, including Senator John Husted and Secretary of State Frank LaRose, have distanced themselves from the tactic, with some observers labeling the campaign strategy as a preview of the "venom" expected in the 2028 presidential cycle.

Despite the backlash, Vance doubled down on the narrative during a subsequent rally, suggesting that voters see through Acton’s "fraudulent activity." His defense mirrors previous rhetoric, such as his 2024 comments regarding the spread of baseless claims about Haitian immigrants in Springfield. Analysts at the Brookings Institution and other observers suggest this aggressive approach signals a shift toward a campaign style defined by personal smears, as the administration faces low approval ratings and mounting economic pressure.
