Netanyahu’s insistence on keeping a security zone in southern Lebanon threatens to derail the memorandum of understanding serving as the foundation for the US-Iran talks. The ongoing military campaign has already displaced approximately 1.2 million people and resulted in 4,200 deaths, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health. While the administration of Donald Trump has privately expressed frustration over what it views as Israeli sabotage, the President and Vice President JD Vance have yet to move beyond verbal criticism.
Defense Minister Israel Katz reinforced this defiance on Wednesday, confirming that the Israel Defense Forces have no intention of withdrawing, even if Washington were to demand it. Katz further barred 200,000 displaced civilians from returning to their homes in the south, citing the destruction of local infrastructure and security risks to Israeli troops. This hardline position complicates the diplomatic effort, as Iranian negotiators maintain that any lasting agreement is contingent upon a comprehensive ceasefire in Lebanon. In response to the continued military pressure, Iranian officials have threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, raising the stakes for an administration hoping to quell economic instability through a swift resolution to the conflict.
