Friends Link Perez Hilton’s Mental Health Crisis to Recent Sepsis Struggle

Friends of Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., known as Perez Hilton, are questioning whether the blogger’s recent mental health crisis is a delayed reaction to a life-threatening bout of sepsis. The 48-year-old was hospitalized Tuesday following a police intervention prompted by a livestream in which he appeared to inflict self-harm.

The incident at his Miami home occurred after the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office received multiple reports regarding the broadcast. While police audio characterized the event as a suicide attempt, Hilton’s family confirmed that his children, niece, and sister were present in the house just before the crisis began, fleeing the scene to shield the children from the unfolding trauma. Following his hospitalization, sources close to the blogger stated his first words were a request for help.

In March, Hilton spent three weeks in the hospital suffering from an ulcer, a perforation, and subsequent sepsis. A month later, he required further emergency surgery for a blood clot. His inner circle suggests this sequence of medical emergencies left deep emotional scars. According to the Sepsis Alliance, nearly half of all survivors experience post-sepsis syndrome, which can manifest as persistent cognitive and psychological instability, including depression and panic attacks.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Andrew Mendonsa, who has not treated Hilton, noted that while such medical trauma can trigger long-term psychological difficulties, it is irresponsible to draw a direct causal link without a formal evaluation. He emphasized that self-harm behaviors are complex and rarely stem from a single medical event. Following the incident, TikTok permanently banned Hilton’s account, citing a moderation error that allowed the livestream to continue for 15 minutes.
