Jun Yang Tapped to Lead Rockefeller University Endowment

With over two decades of experience managing institutional funds, Jun Yang will take the helm of The Rockefeller University’s $3.0 billion endowment on July 1, 2026. He succeeds Paula Volent, who steered the biomedical research institution through recent financial volatility and will remain on staff as a senior advisor.

Yang joins the university from Oberlin College, where he oversaw the institution’s investment program. His background also includes managing assets for the Weizmann Trust, which supports the Weizmann Institute of Science. Rockefeller President Richard P. Lifton noted that Yang’s appointment comes at a critical juncture, as the funding landscape for scientific research faces increasing uncertainty. The university, which counts 26 Nobel Prizes among its historical accolades, relies on the endowment to maintain the financial stability required for its high-level biomedical work.

Volent, widely recognized for her tenure at the university, is credited with assembling a high-performing team and securing access to exclusive investment opportunities. Her transition to a part-time advisory role is intended to ensure continuity for the investment office. Bill Ford, chair of the Board of Trustees, emphasized that Volent’s efforts over the last five years fortified the university’s financial position. Yang, who holds an MBA from Cornell University and engineering degrees from Stevens Institute of Technology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, expressed his intent to build upon that established foundation to support future scientific discovery.
