Built on the foundation of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s Envoy Gateway project, the v1.0 release bridges the gap between traditional internet traffic management and the specific demands of modern AI workloads. By leveraging the same proxy technology already used by organizations like Netflix, Spotify, and Databricks, the gateway offers a hardened solution for routing, governance, and observability in agentic and LLM-driven environments.
Bloomberg, which initiated the project to resolve its own challenges with AI reliability, currently uses the software in production. The release introduces several critical features designed for high-stakes enterprise use, including a unified API compatible with major providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google Gemini, as well as native support for the Model Context Protocol. Furthermore, the platform enables token-aware traffic management and centralized credential handling, allowing teams to enforce rate limits and cost controls directly at the infrastructure level. As the project enters this mature phase, the community is shifting its focus toward deeper agentic security and dollar-based cost governance, aiming to solidify the gateway as the primary open standard for AI traffic management.
