Holland & Barrett CFO Challenges Retail Decline Narrative

The persistent claim that physical stores are becoming obsolete in an era of digital dominance is demonstrably false, according to Holland & Barrett CFO Vineta Bajaj. Drawing on the retailer’s performance in Ireland, she argues that brick-and-mortar locations remain central to how consumers engage with brands and make purchasing decisions.

Bajaj highlighted that the company maintains 70 stores across Ireland, employing nearly 500 staff members. Over the past year, the firm has opened three new locations and finalized three relocations, ensuring almost the entire Irish estate is modernized. This strategy prioritizes the customer experience, supported by partnerships with 30 local suppliers across 300 product lines.

Data from the past year reveals that 2.8 million customers shopped with the brand in Ireland, with only 300,000 transactions occurring online. The vast majority of consumers continue to favor the high street over digital-only engagement. Bajaj suggests that for retailers to remain relevant, they must move beyond price competition and instead focus on establishing a tangible presence in communities where competitors are hesitant to invest.
