Ex-Officer Sean Reifel Defends Reality TV Exit Amid Mayor’s Criticism

Conflict erupted in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, after Mayor William J. Reynolds publicly condemned police officer Sean Reifel for resigning to join the cast of Love Island. While the administration claims the city was left in the lurch, Reifel maintains he was transparent with his superiors about his departure plans before filming.

Reifel addressed the controversy during the premiere of Love Island: Aftersun, expressing confusion over the mayor’s public rebuke. The 29-year-old asserted that he followed proper protocol, stating he held a sit-down meeting with department leadership to explain his intentions and request unpaid leave. He noted the irony of the situation, highlighting that he had recently received departmental commendations for rescuing a woman from a burning building and de-escalating a suicide attempt.

Mayor Reynolds, however, remains critical of the move, citing the significant taxpayer investment in Reifel’s police academy training. He labeled the career pivot a disappointment, emphasizing that the department now faces a staffing vacancy that cannot be filled until next year. Police Chief Michelle Kott echoed these sentiments, noting the difficulty of recruiting and retaining officers. Reifel declined to retaliate against his former colleagues, opting to keep his comments brief to avoid further escalation.
