Patrick Stewart’s Early Struggle with Hair Loss Led to Manual Labor

At age 17, Patrick Stewart found himself desperate to reverse his rapidly thinning hair, a youthful insecurity that drove him to take an unexpected detour into construction. To fund a series of futile clinical treatments in Bristol, the future Star Trek icon spent his teenage years working as a bricklayer.

In his memoir, Making It So, Stewart recounts how the sudden loss of his once-thick hair during his first year at drama school prompted a frantic search for a cure. He secured a laborer position at a construction firm near his home in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, specifically to cover the costs of scalp massages, electrical patches, and various creams. Despite the manual labor and financial commitment, the treatments failed to halt the balding process. By the time he was 19, he had accepted his permanent hair loss.

This physical transformation eventually became a cornerstone of his professional identity. During auditions for Star Trek: The Next Generation, producers initially intended for Stewart to wear a wig for the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. After observing him without the hairpiece, the team opted to keep his natural look, cementing an image that would define his career. While he once viewed his baldness as a source of teenage distress, it ultimately provided the distinct aesthetic that anchored one of television’s most recognizable characters.
