Senate Candidate Graham Platner Shares News of Miscarriage

Following a public journey to Norway for affordable fertility care, US Senate candidate Graham Platner and his wife, Amy Gertner, announced on Monday that they have suffered a miscarriage. The couple, who had traveled abroad to highlight the prohibitive costs of US healthcare, are now navigating a period of private grief.

The couple had previously shared their decision to seek IVF treatment in Norway this past January, noting that the procedure cost less than a quarter of the price in the United States. By going public with their struggle, they sought to draw attention to the often-ignored hardships surrounding fertility access and the frequency of pregnancy loss. According to the couple, one in five known pregnancies ends in miscarriage, a reality they hope to destigmatize through their transparency.

Political allies have rallied around the candidate following the news. Rep. Ro Khanna, who endorsed the combat veteran and oyster farmer’s campaign last year, stated that the couple’s openness would serve as a guide for others facing similar pain. Karthik Soora, a former Texas state Senate candidate, also offered support, drawing on his own experience with the loss of a child. Platner, currently campaigning against Maine Governor Janet Mills for the June 9 primary, requested privacy as he and Gertner process the loss.
