FMC and Corteva Partner on Novel Herbicide Technology

FMC Corporation and Corteva have entered a decade-long licensing agreement to distribute rimisoxafen, a breakthrough dual-mode herbicide. By combining resources, the two agricultural giants aim to combat the global spread of herbicide-resistant weeds, such as Amaranthus, that currently threaten corn and soybean yields across the Americas.

Under the terms of the deal, FMC retains full ownership of the rimisoxafen molecule and will serve as the primary supplier of the active ingredient to Corteva. While FMC continues to explore global applications for the technology in other crops, both firms will independently develop and commercialize their own proprietary premix formulations tailored for corn and soybean markets. Corteva has committed to a $200 million prepurchase payment as part of the collaboration.

Industry experts view the technology as a critical defense against resistant weeds like palmer amaranth and waterhemp, which are responsible for billions of dollars in annual crop losses. The Herbicide Resistance Action Committee has officially classified rimisoxafen as the industry’s first dual-mode herbicide, a distinction that provides a higher barrier to resistance than traditional single-mode alternatives. Pending regulatory approval, the companies expect to see the first commercial sales by the end of the decade.
