AI Search Rankings Disrupt Traditional Home Security Market

Legacy alarm providers are losing the battle for consumer attention as AI search engines prioritize DIY-friendly brands. According to the 2026 Home Security AI Visibility Index, Amazon’s Ring and SimpliSafe now dominate the digital retrieval space, frequently sidelining 150-year-old industry leader ADT in automated recommendations.

The shift highlights a fundamental change in the $57.8 billion U.S. home security market, where the buyer journey has migrated from traditional dealer networks to chat-based interfaces. Ring currently commands a 16% citation share across major platforms like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, followed by SimpliSafe at approximately 12%. ADT, despite its century-and-a-half tenure, trails at 9.5%.

Data suggests that AI models favor brands built on the digital review economy. The doorbell camera has emerged as the primary gateway for security inquiries, often serving as the default answer for general queries. Brands that offer no-contract, wireless systems gain a significant advantage in these rankings, as AI engines rely heavily on the DIY-focused listicles that populate the web. Conversely, when queries include specific smart-home integrations, competitors like Google Nest, Wyze, and Eufy see a surge in relevance.

According to Ronn Torossian, founder of 5W, the disparity reflects a disconnect between historical reliability and modern search behavior. He notes that while ADT remains a staple of American home protection, AI models are effectively blind to dealer networks, instead favoring the highly reviewed, internet-native brands that dominate online discourse.
