ESA Taps NUVIEW for Lunar Mapping Mission

The European Space Agency has selected the Moonraker mission for a Phase A study, tasking Berlin-based NUVIEW with deploying space-based LiDAR to map the lunar surface. The project aims to provide high-resolution 3D terrain data essential for mitigating risks during future robotic and human landings at the Moon’s South Pole.

As the prime contractor, NUVIEW will lead an international consortium to adapt its commercial Earth-observation LiDAR architecture for lunar orbit. By generating precise Digital Elevation Models, the mission will specifically target permanently shadowed regions where traditional optical imaging often fails. These datasets are expected to serve as a foundation for hazard assessment and long-term infrastructure planning.

Katie Graumann, CEO of NUVIEW Germany, noted that the technology bridges the gap between existing Earth-based mapping and mission-critical lunar requirements. Backed by investor Leonardo DiCaprio, the project aligns with broader European efforts to secure reliable terrain intelligence. DiCaprio stated that high-resolution 3D mapping facilitates smarter, safer decision-making as humanity advances its footprint beyond Earth, framing the initiative as a vital step for responsible space exploration.
