The Mandalorian & Grogu, which transitioned from a Disney+ series to the big screen, struggled to find a foothold after its initial release. While the film maintained an 87% audience approval rating, critics were less forgiving, awarding it a 62% score. Many reviewers, including Adam Nayman of the Toronto Star, criticized the project as "reheated leftovers," citing a thin plot and lackluster dialogue. The production faced additional scrutiny for the heavy editing of voice actor Jeremy Allen White, who portrayed Rotta the Hutt, and the decision to have the character speak Basic rather than the traditional Huttese.
Despite the mixed reception, some critics found merit in the film's technical execution. William Bibbiani of The Wrap lauded the movie as a "deft and enjoyable blockbuster," while Robert Abele of the Los Angeles Times compared the visuals to a creature feature in the vein of Guillermo del Toro. Nevertheless, the franchise is already looking toward its next installment, Star Wars: Starfighter. Set to premiere on May 28, 2027, the upcoming project features a high-profile cast including Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth, and is tasked with moving the saga beyond the narrative constraints of the First Order era.
