Sorkin spent three days attempting to persuade Eisenberg to return, noting that the actor felt his identity had become too inextricably linked to the tech founder. Eisenberg, who has publicly criticized Zuckerberg’s obsession with power and his political associations, expressed exhaustion with fans approaching him in public to reference iconic lines from the 2010 film. According to Sorkin, the actor simply no longer wished to be conflated with the man he portrayed.
Following the refusal, Sorkin cast Jeremy Strong, whom he encountered at a 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar party. Strong, who described the script as one of the finest he has encountered, approached the role with a commitment to objectivity and empathy. Sorkin noted that Strong’s transformation was immediate, noting that the actor began speaking with Zuckerberg’s cadence from the very first day on set. The new film shifts focus from the platform's origin to the 2021 whistleblower disclosures by Frances Haugen, detailing how Facebook navigated internal evidence regarding the platform's societal harms. The Social Reckoning is scheduled for release on October 9, 2026.
