In the rugged valleys of Shanxi’s Zuoquan County, Lichang Village has transformed its struggle with depopulation into a model of modern rural care. By leveraging solar revenue and digital health monitoring, the community is securing a stable future for its elderly residents while revitalizing traditional agricultural industries.
Once defined by the exodus of its youth, Lichang Village now centers its community life around an elderly day care facility established in 2014. The center provides daily meals for residents over 65, funded by an annual investment of 200,000 yuan. This financial stability is largely sustained by a local photovoltaic project, where solar panels installed on rooftops and mountain slopes generate steady income by feeding electricity into the national grid.Beyond basic nutrition, the village has integrated digital safeguards to protect its aging population. Residents wear smart bracelets that track vital signs—such as heart rate and blood pressure—and transmit data to a central dispatch unit. This system provides automated alerts for health irregularities or physical falls, allowing remote family members to monitor their parents' well-being in real time. The same digital infrastructure now supports the village's economy, utilizing environmental sensors to refine the cultivation of Jinmei apricots and optimize local black goat breeding. By blending social support with technological investment, the village has moved toward a model of sustainable rural development.
