Designer Claims Janet Jackson’s 2004 Super Bowl Reveal Was Intentional

Two decades after the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show, designer Wayne Scot Lukas is challenging the narrative that Janet Jackson’s exposed breast was a wardrobe malfunction. He contends the incident was a planned costume reveal that failed to execute as intended, contradicting long-standing claims from Justin Timberlake and production staff.

Lukas, who styled Jackson for the 2004 performance, asserts that the bustier functioned exactly as designed. The original choreography intended to reveal a pearl G-string, but plans shifted just two days before the show. The new objective was a brief, teased exposure of Jackson’s breast, covered immediately by the singer as the broadcast cut to black. The maneuver failed when the expected reaction—Jackson covering herself—did not occur, and the production team failed to cut the live feed.

Evidence supporting the idea of a planned stunt includes testimony from body piercer Byriah Dailey, who claims Lukas purchased a nipple shield in Houston and explicitly told him to watch for a surprise. Conversely, NFL executive Jim Steeg and producer Salli Frattini have maintained that no reveal was ever authorized. Following the broadcast, Jackson bore the brunt of the public fallout, a disparity she later addressed in a 2006 interview with Oprah Winfrey, noting that the pressure to apologize was driven by her management team rather than her own desire to take sole responsibility for the incident.
