Ellen DeGeneres Mourns Longtime Producer Matt Wright

The unexpected death of Matt Wright, a core architect of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" for 16 years, has left the former host grappling with a profound personal and professional loss. Wright, 52, passed away on October 30 while working remotely, cutting short plans for a new collaborative project.

DeGeneres shared her grief in an Instagram video posted November 2, describing Wright as the "glue" that held her television family together. Beyond his executive producer duties, he was a fixture in the show’s culture, known for his humor and intelligence. The loss carries additional weight for the team, as Wright maintained a close bond with the show’s former DJ, Stephen "tWitch" Boss, who died in 2022. DeGeneres noted the poignancy of their renewed connection, stating, "Now he and tWitch are together, dancing and laughing."

Financial strain has compounded the family's grief, as Wright and his husband, Justin, had both been laid off earlier this summer. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist with funeral costs and the repatriation of his remains to New York. DeGeneres led the effort with a $5,000 contribution, joined by other industry colleagues including executive producer Andy Lassner, who donated $1,000, and Allison Holker Boss, who contributed $500. Any surplus funds from the campaign are designated for a trust for Wright’s niece.
