The streaming giant briefly considered canceling the project entirely, as the cast was central to their original vision for the series. According to a Netflix insider, the refusal was not a singular coordinated statement but a shared sentiment among the actors. Sources close to Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox indicated that the two actresses felt they had reached a point where publicly discussing their late friend was simply too painful, preferring to hold onto their private memories rather than sit for televised interviews.
Following the cast’s withdrawal, the production team shifted focus to Perry’s half-sister, Mia, who provided the project with its emotional anchor. As a psychotherapist specializing in substance-use treatment, Mia offered a unique perspective on her brother’s struggles. Her involvement encouraged other contributors to join, including former NBC president Warren Littlefield and various close friends of the actor. The resulting three-part series, titled The One About Matthew Perry, aims to explore his career and battle with addiction without the participation of his most famous colleagues. The documentary stands in contrast to Perry’s own 2022 memoir, where he famously likened the supportive bond of his castmates to penguins, who physically surround and protect an injured member of the group until they can stand on their own.
